We strongly support a new state commission on Charter Schools
I believe in a strong public education system that prioritizes the needs of students and families to create greater opportunities and a better-prepared workforce is fundamental to our success as a state. While Tennessee has been the fastest improving state in the nation in education in recent years, progress in our public schools has slowed, with too many students, especially low-income students, students of color, and students with disabilities, being left further behind. We must be bold in exploring new strategies to support these and all students. That’s why I strongly support Governor Lee’s proposal to create a new state commission on Charter Schools. Data shows that states with this kind of non-political chartering authorities are home to some of the highest quality charter schools in the nation. This commission will help ensure the highest level of quality and access to a public education for all students in Tennessee.
I urge you to join Governor Lee to create this new state charter public school authorizer - and to help Tennessee continue to lead the way in student growth and in creating even greater opportunities for families and students that need them the most.
